College Day Event Benefits Homeless Youth

On April 23, MAAC is partnering with Essex Regional Educational Services Commission for Homeless Children and Youth (ERESC) to present a college day event for Essex County high school students experiencing homelessness.
This day-long event at Montclair State University will provide students with opportunities for learning and connection to vital resources that enable them to realize their dream of attending college.
The day's activities will include workshops, speakers and connections with industry professionals, giveaways, and a college fair. "We are beyond excited to provide this uplifting and educational opportunity to young people who have already overcome so many barriers to academic access and success," said Andrea Smith-Morgan. "We want to help as many students as we can."
ERESC is funding 35 students to attend this event, and has invited MAAC to invite additional students experiencing homelessness. MAAC is accepting donations from those who wish to either sponsor a student to attend ($70), offset t costs to MAAC (any amount), or donate gift cards (any denomination) to the event to be used as prizes. Lulu Kashiwabara, Tutor Extraordinaire
Lulu Kashiwabara is one of MAAC's virtual tutors and an enthusiastic supporter of the MAAC mission:
Hi, my name is Lulu Kashiwabara, and I’m proud to be one of MAAC’s virtual tutors! I just moved to New Jersey this past fall from Oregon, and have enjoyed helping out scholars in my time here. In school, one of my favorite things to do is literary analysis and writing, specifically in ELA and Spanish classes. Due to this, I love helping others with these subjects, and hope they’ll be able to find enjoyment when studying them. For anyone reading this, I hope you keep learning and stay curious!

Zyaire Finds A Home!
This is the follow-up to last month's feature on new MAAC scholar Zyaire Martinez.
Ask, and you will receive. That's what happened to Zyaire Martinez, a college student who was forced to leave school due to financial constraints, leaving him without a school, but also without a home. MAAC is working to help connect Zyaire with resources, with the ultimate goal of getting him back into Montclair State University, where he previously attended. MAAC executive director Andrea Smith-Morgan shared Zyaire's story, and the community responded!
Donations received so far include furniture, bedding, clothing, and food and hygiene products--and the best part is, a group of MAAC volunteers helped Zyaire move these items into his new home in Montclair. where he has his own room and will share a sitting room and kitchen with two other young adults.
Zyaire's academic future is still uncertain, but he's keeping busy working at a clinic helping others, and has accepted the request to serve as the keynote speaker at MAAC's College Day Event on April 23 at the very college he hopes to return to one day soon.
